The Melnyczuk Family Web Site

At home

As this site grows, you will probably see a lot of animal pictures. The blonde dog is called Anton (after my brother).

The chicken does have a name, Karl — although we don't use the name. (Originally it was Karla, named by one of Mikhailo's employees after her sister-in-law, but then it grew into a cockerel). We did not invite it to live here, but it seems to have decided that this would be its home. We suspect that it got lost when some senseless children who live nearby were flinging their chickens into the air. Chickens are social animals, and since this one has no avian company, it flocks and grazes with the dogs. It prefers to eat the same food as they do — and it is just as choosy in chomping the meat pieces first.
Here's the chicken watching the commuter train going by on the right; in the background is an ESKOM (electricity) sub-station, and in the distance one of Stellenbosch's mountains known as the Pieke. This green thing on the left is a fig tree which just happens to have sprouted in the middle of the brick-paved yard. Mikhailo has been nurturing it.
